Introduction to Silversmithing
Silversmithing
Once you have produced a cabochon or two You will probably want to turn it into a piece of jewelry that you can actually wear. One way to do this is through Silversmithing.
Silver smithing is the process of cutting, shaping, soldering, and polishing silver to produce a pendant or a ring. We don’t do goldsmithing in our shop, but the skills you learn silversmithing can open that door to individual members if they choose.
Silversmithing requires members to take a class from one of our instructors in the skill. The cost of the class only covers the cost of the materials used.
The first projects are pendants, which are easier. From there a person can learn to make rings and bracelets that require more experience and skill.
Many members don’t choose to learn silversmithing, which is perfectly fine. But for those who are interested the resource tools are available. Those who do progress to this skill provide their own materials and the shop provides tools.
Each person who uses the silversmithing area is responsible for cleaning, straightening, and reorganizing the work area after their work session, so that it will be ready for the next person to use.
